Enhancing Interview Strategies with Hogan Assessments

Enhancing Interview Strategies with Hogan Assessments

Hiring the right candidate isn’t just about evaluating skills and experience—it’s about understanding how they behave both on a typical workday and under pressure. While traditional interviews can give some insight, they often fail to uncover deeper personality traits. This is where Hogan Assessments can add real value.

Hogan Assessments consist of two key tools for hiring managers: the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) and the Hogan Development Survey (HDS). The HPI measures bright-side traits, such as sociability, prudence, and ambition, which indicate how a candidate will typically behave in a role. Meanwhile, the HDS focuses on dark-side traits—personality risks that may emerge under stress, such as being overly cautious, excitable, or overly confident.

By integrating these assessments into the interview process, hiring managers can tailor their questions to validate strengths and explore potential risks. For example, if a candidate has a high score in Prudence, an interviewer might ask about their ability to enforce rules and policies, ensuring they can balance structure with flexibility. If they score high in Bold, exploring how they handle criticism can provide insight into whether their confidence might turn into arrogance under pressure.

Using Hogan Assessments in interviews allows for a more strategic approach to hiring. Instead of relying on first impressions or well-prepared responses, hiring managers can dig deeper, ensuring that the candidate’s personality aligns with both the role and the organisational culture. This leads to better hiring decisions, reduced turnover, and stronger long-term performance.

By combining structured interviews with personality assessments, organisations can minimise hiring risks and maximise the potential of their workforce. Whether hiring for leadership roles or team-based positions, understanding both bright- and dark-side traits provides a clearer, more accurate picture of a candidate’s true potential.
